The Check's In The Mail

Have you ever heard one of those stories where someone had a need, and they went to the mailbox only to find a check that met that need? Well, I've heard several, and I always thought it would be a cool thing to experience. Not that we haven't seen God provide for us in amazing ways. I just always thought those stories were incredible. Well, today was our "check in the mail" story day!!

It all began Friday when Kenney's truck started having problems. Not it's time to put air in your tire or get your brakes checked problems, but something is seriously wrong problems. We were both a little on edge this weekend knowing that we couldn't afford any major repairs right now and the fact that Kenney needs his truck for work to haul equipment, ladders, etc. He took his truck in this morning to get it looked at and received the news that it wasn't the transmission or anything major like that, but that we were still looking at $400+ in repairs.

This afternoon, I began opening the mail as Kenney was leaving to pick up his truck. I got to the last envelope which looked like one of those notices that tells you that you're involved in a class action lawsuit. To my surprise, this was not your normal letter -it was a letter with a check attached to the bottom! Apparently, a suit was filed by the Federal Trade Commission against one of our prior mortgage servicers (from 10 years ago!). The check amount was $444.56. I immediately called Kenney, who was on his way home, and asked how much the truck repairs were. Are you ready....$446.18. I guess God knew we could handle $1.62!!!!

Oh wait...there's more. The Beast stayed home from school today and REALLY needed some "Dad time". In fact, she specifically requested it which is a little unusual for her as she normally does the majority of her talking with me. Obviously, Kenney could not work because his truck was in the shop all day. Needless to say, she got more "Dad time" than she could have asked for!

Recipe...No Kitchen Required

I received this in an e-mail today...GOOD STUFF!

RECIPE

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

Consider It An Opportunity for Great Joy

Here's today's devotional from Encouragement for Today. It really spoke to me as we have several friends who are in the midst of some pretty tough trials right now.

Dramatic Sunrise
Van Walton

"Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete..." James 1:2-4 (NLT)

Devotion:
Have you ever risen early in the morning with one purpose -- to watch the sun rise? I especially like to take time for sunrises, so I purposefully chose to rise early each day during my vacation.

One morning I found myself sitting on the dock facing east, looking for the sun to rise up over the lake.

Another morning I sat on the long veranda of a century-old hotel gazing at the Ohio River, waiting for the golden glow that would announce the sun's arrival.

Days later, toward the end of my trip, I wrapped myself in a heavy blanket and curled up in the glider on the front porch of the cabin where I had spent the night. Peering over the Utah landscape, once again I searched the horizon.

Soon a bright orange blaze appeared, forcing me to close my eyes because of its brilliance. In a few seconds, with wide-opened eyes, I continued my search for the morning's drama, only to see a half globe sitting on top of the mountains. I kept watching, not wanting to miss the spectacular sight. Then, in another blink of an eye, the sun lifted itself from the peaks, and hung there in the sky - a perfect golden circle.

That was it. It went so quick. The sun had come up, creeping into the day, and now it simply dangled -- a yellow ball in the air, surrounded by blue, looking like a child's simple drawing.

For a few minutes I pondered my disenchantment with this particular sunrise. Is there such a thing as an incomplete, imperfect sunrise? At that moment I believed there was. I had just experienced it. And, I remembered others like it, somewhat lackluster.

Why had the sunrise not impressed me this day? Where was all the drama I had expected? Then I realized there is no drama in a sunrise without clouds.

Clouds - they've been given a bum rap, but all along, these predictors of bad weather, these symbols of negativity, sadness, blues, and gloom really serve to expand light, reflect color, cast dazzling rays, and paint incredible scenes in the sky.

A sunrise without clouds is like a life without trials and hardships. I do all I can to avoid challenges and difficulties, but the fact is the so called "clouds" in my life can cast me in a certain aura of God's splendor. A life free of complications and struggles can resemble a bland sunrise ... little contrast, seemingly dull artistry, and little context in which I can reflect the Son.

Truth is, the people I respect and admire most are those whose lives have been filled with "clouds" but they walk through any weather with God. These people walk in splendor, surrounded with a certain attractive and hard-to-capture beauty. They are people I seek out on a regular basis. I pursue them because I want to bask in their glow and confidence. They leave me in awe.

One thing is sure. I'm never disappointed when I find myself in the company of those who have learned to rise up in the midst of clouds. They don't seek to avoid cloudy days; rather they stand up to walk in dignity, accepting the brilliant contrasts and magical rays God can create despite and through their adversity.

It is in their presence I realize, a life free of clouds holds no attraction. Now I see cloudy days in a positive light. May I never shun them again, for I realize clouds build character, add color, and separate the bland from the brilliant.

Power Verses:
1 Peter 1:6-8, "In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." (NASB)

These are hard words, yet they are so true. I think of the people who have walked or who are walking right now through big storm clouds with God. They give me hope and reveal God's faithfulness to carry us through any time. I was thinking of that verse in James the other day and considered the fact that if we are called to embrace our trials with great joy, then we should be helping our brothers and sisters do the same in the midst of their trials. That does not mean that we make light of the situation, or that we don't show compassion, grieve with them, or whatever the situation calls for. It does mean, however, that we help them see beyond the worldly view of the situation and lead them to God's truth.

Yesterday was a day that exemplified this devotional. I had the privilege of attending the Celebration of Life service for little Jeremiah Parker Shelby. While there were many tears shed, the end result was a focus on God's faithfulness and goodness. I left encouraged and able to consider the situation with joy - joy in the miracle of Jeremy's hour of life with his parents, joy in the strength that God is displaying through Beth, Aaron and their families, joy that they will one day be reunited with their son, joy in the comfort of the family of God who surrounds us during the hard days- joy in so many things!

Peacock

It has taken awhile for Sydney to decide what "animal" she should be. My parents had suggested a peacock. Known for it's beautiful colors (usually green and blue which happen to be Sydney's favorite), the peacock just seems to fit Sydney in many ways. Her personality, style, and creativity are all colorful and beautiful. I think it's a good choice!

Difficult Circumstances

Here is a portion of today's devotion from Encouragement for Today (Proverbs 31 Ministries):

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." Matthew: 7:24-27 (NIV)

Devotion:
Do you know what amazes me about those verses above? Both the person doing right and the person doing wrong experienced hard times. In both cases the rains came, the streams rose, and the wind blew and beat against the house.

Just because we're Christians living out God's principles for life, does not mean we won't face difficult circumstances. The difference being a Christian makes is how the difficulties affect us. If we are hearing and heeding God through our prayer time and reading His Word, then we will be able to stand strong in the storms of life. Our faith will not be shaken and our identity will not be rattled.

When hard times come and beat against our stability, we must be determined to hear God's words and put them into practice. Then nothing can topple our peace, security, or true identity.

Dear Lord, Thank You that my identity does not have to be determined by the circumstances of my life. Help me to hear Your Words, put them into practice and stand firm on Your truth. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

An Opportunity to Bless

Our dear friends welcomed their son, Jeremiah Parker Shelby, into the world on January 4, and released him just over an hour later into the arms of Jesus. The Shelby's life group has provided a couple of ways to provide for their financial needs:

1. Memorial Fund -ALL Donations will go directly to the Shelby Family to cover funeral expenses. If the financial blessing outweighs the cost, the remainder of the proceeds will be forwarded to the Trisomy 13 charity of the parents' choice. Donations are being accepted at all FORUM CREDIT UNION branches. Just go into the branch and give them Jeremy's name and tell them it is for a memorial fund. After the funeral services - all money will be released to the Shelby's so please make your contributions prior to that date. All donations will be anonymous. Today was bath day for Moriah (a good opportunity for those "blackmail photos" :0) After she let the water out, she stood up like she was scared and then started saying "bye bye" to the water

Addiction

I have a new addiction - it involves sales, coupons & CVS. I regularly check this site to see what adrenaline rush I can get by shopping at CVS - who knew that you could go shopping and actually make a profit?

This site gives me general savings tips and leads on great, reasonably priced products.

Here's how my trip to CVS went today. I purchased the following:

(2) 6-packs of Glucerna shakes @ $10.49 each
(1) 120 count Bounce @ $5.88 (CVS sale price)
(2) boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios

I paid $13.94 (I had (2) $10 coupons for the Glucerna, a $.25 coupon for the Bounce, and $1 ECB)
I received $13.50 in ECB (Extra Care Bucks)
Total cost of my items: $.44!

I also love this site - you can print all kinds of coupons and even add a coupon bar to your browser and have instant access to printable coupons!

Happy bargain hunting!

(BTW, my husband told me my new frugality was "hot". It must be one of the benefits of picking up a trait of the Proverbs 31 woman :0)

New For 2009

I love having a blog...it's kind of like scrapbooking only much easier for people who are creatively challenged like I am. It's also a great way to keep family and friends up to date with what is going on in our lives. In looking back through our blog over the past year, there is a dominant theme - OUR KIDS. That is not a bad thing because they are such a blessing to us. Starting this year,however, I am hoping to add posts that are not ALL related to our kids :0) So here goes:

PRAYER:
We have two very dear families who are in need of your prayers. Many of you know them and are already praying. For those who don't, here is an opportunity to interceed for these precious people.

Beth and Aaron are expecting their first baby any time now. Please lift up the entire family as they await the arrival of Jeremiah Parker.

The Ellis family is facing a season of physical challenges. Pray for God's peace and wisdom as they continue to lean on Him during this time.

GOD'S PROMISES:
I caught a little bit of Walk in the Word today (on my way to CVS - see above post) and heard James MacDonald teach about patience, perseverance and waiting on God to fulfill his promises. There are so many promises in God's Word! Unfortunately, we often discount them because they don't come to fruition when we want them to. I was challenged to constantly keep God's promises before me and to wait expectantly for them to be fulfilled.

One example James gave was about bringing up children in the instruction of the Lord. James' version ended with, "and when they are TEENAGERS, they won't depart from it". His point is obvious - the Word doesn't say that. It says when they are OLD, they won't depart from it. What a good reminder of a promise that I don't have to expect to be fulfilled right now!

Another promise that he spoke about was the fact that God's Word does not return void. He challenged us to constantly speak/share/teach scripture because it will eventually bear fruit. This is not true about man's words - the human advice we give, the nagging, the lectures, etc. Another great promise!
